Ian Holloway wants Darren Bent to spearhead his Premier league new boys…
Crystal Palace are set for an ambitious loan move for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent, reports the Telegraph.
Ian Holloway is desperate to recruit some proven quality, as his newly-promoted side look woefully undercooked with the Premier League season set to start this coming weekend.
Palace have already brought in Marouane Chamakh, Dwight Gayle and Stephen Dobbie to help Championship top-scorer Glenn Murray with the goal tally, but none have proven Premier League pedigree like 29-year-old Bent.
The striker will be desperate to secure guaranteed first-team football after a miserable season at Villa Park where he played second-fiddle to young Belgian hotshot Christian Benteke. With the shortage of English striking talent, it’s not infeasible to suggest that Bent could force his way into Roy Hodgson’s World Cup plans next summer if he has a successful goalscoring season.
One stumbling block could the striker’s substantial £65,000-a-week wages, but Palace chairman Simon Jordan could back Holloway, who won him promotion via the play-offs last season.
The forward has 179 goals in all competitions during his club career, and would be looking forward to rejuvenate his career following an unhappy time at Villa Park.
