Here’s our Premier League team of the week, from another exciting round of fixtures…
GK) Ben Foster – West Brom
The English stopper kept a clean sheet at home to West Ham, that puts the Baggies almost certain of Premier League safety.
DR) Cesar Azpilicueta – Chelsea
An excellent, excellent performance from Chelsea’s versatile Spaniard. He didn’t put a foot wrong against the likes of Raheem Sterling and Luis Suarez, and helped the Blues become only the second side to restrict Liverpool at Anfield all season.
DC) Jose Fonte – Southampton
Dejan Lovren gets plaudits usually, but his partner Fonte was more impressive against Romelu Lukaku, denting Everton’s top four hopes with a 2-0 win.
DC) Vincent Kompany – Manchester City
Back to his best following tricky matches against Liverpool and Sunderland in recent weeks. Kompany was domineering, and never let the Palace attackers get a sniff.
DL) Danny Rose – Tottenham
Rose was a constant bombarding presence up Spurs’ left, helping his side win away at Stoke, and scoring the game’s winning goal as well.
MC) Nemanja Matic – Chelsea
Matic was so impressive in his defensive midfield role, Liverpool players like Steven Gerrard and Joe Allen had to content themselves with shots from outside the area.
MC) Jonjo Shelvey – Swansea
Shelvey passed Aston Villa to death, earning his side a 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, and bagged a Goal of the Season contender with a volley from just inside the opposition half!
MC) Juan Mata – Manchester United
Another brace from the £37m Spaniard. Mata came off the bench after the hour mark, but showed interim boss Ryan Giggs why he perhaps should have been starting…
FC) Wayne Rooney – Manchester United
Rooney bagged his 16th and 17th goals of the season against a hapless Norwich side.
FC) Connor Wickham – Sunderland
Wickham bagged two more for Sunderland in the 4-0 romp of Cardiff, making it five goals in three games for himself. As a result, some are touting him as an outside bet to make the World Cup squad!
FC) Wilfried Bony – Swansea
The Ivorian powerhouse has bagged 25 goals in all competitions, and is proving to be one of the signings of the season. Two more goals against Villa, means that many larger Premier League sides may come in for him in the summer.
