1. Zinedine Zidane (France, 2006)
Not the first sending off in a World Cup final, but probably the most shocking. One of the greatest players on the planet and the captain of the French team produced one of the most violent moments in World Cup history in 2006 against Italy.
With the two sides level and penalty kicks just around the corner, Italy defender Marco Materazzi said something derogatory to Zidane which did not sit well with the legendary playmaker. The Frenchman turned to face his foe and head-butted him in the chest, sending him crashing to the floor. Zidane was red carded and his team went on to lose on penalties.
