5. Antonio Rattin (Argentina, 1966)
England’s World Cup win in 1966 can be credited to a number of things. Geoff Hurst’s hat-trick, the famous Russian linesman and home advantage are three of those factors, but Antonio Rattin’s red card against them in the quarter-finals was also key.
The Argentina skipper was dismissed for dissent against England and had to be removed by two policeman after initially refusing to leave the field. Had he not have been dealt with so harshly, the excellent Argentina side may have knocked out the hosts in the last eight.
