A rising star in League One, Mason Holgate has impressed the top managers in the Premier League. How long will it take for him to earn a start?
Man United are facing a surprising challenge in their bid for Barnsley teenage defender Mason Holgate.
According to the Daily Post, Everton have emerged as potential hijackers of a £1 million deal for the 18-year-old Holgate. With Everton virtually guaranteed to lose star defender John Stones in a bid by Chelsea, the Toffees see Holgate as a young star who can replace Stones.
Man United were pegged as the frontrunners for Holgate’s signature earlier this month after giving him a tryout, but a deal was never reached.
It was previously reported that Holgate made 22 appearances for Barnsley and scored one goal during the last season and is expected to have a major role next season.
Holgate has played his entire football career with Barnsley, dating back to his time with the club’s youth league when he was only nine years old.
Everton are hoping to return to the Europa League in 2016 after finishing outside the top 7 last season – preventing them from qualifying after playing in the league during the 2014-15 season.
