Costa Rica will have an army of neutrals behind them tonight as they bid to continue their 2014 FIFA World Cup fairytale by reaching the semi-finals.
The Central American minnows began the competition as 2,500-1 outsiders to lift football’s grandest prize, but their odds have since been cut to 40-1 following four impressive displays.
After defeating Uruaguay 3-1 and Italy 1-0, Costa Rica held England to a goalless draw and then edged past Greece 5-3 in a penalty shootout.
Goalkeeper Keylor Navas, the hero of the shootout, is a minor doubt for tonight’s game because of a shoulder problem.
Costa Rica will also be without centre-back Oscar Duarte, who is suspended after being sent off against Greece.
Another defender, Roy Miller, is expected to miss out too, having picked up a foot injury.
The Netherlands have a couple of fitness issues of their own.
Midfielder Nigel de Jong is out with a groin strain, but Wesley Sneijder should be fit, despite injuring his back in last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Mexico.
Sneijder netted an 88th-minute equaliser against Mexico, before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored a stoppage-time penalty to complete a dramatic turnaround.
