IRELAND
Joe Schimdt’s first Six Nations as a Test coach should see a greater familiarity with all those members of the squad who did not play under the New Zealander when he was in charge of Leinster.
A fascinating question is whether Ireland can sustain the intensity that so nearly carried them to victory over the All Blacks in November before a heart-breaking 24-22 loss in Dublin or whether that effort will remain a glorious one-off.
Schmidt finds himself working with a core group of experienced players led by captain Paul O’Connell but there were signs of a team ‘getting old together’ before that late rally against the All Blacks.
This is set to be the final Six Nations before retirement of centre great Brian O’Driscoll, who stands poised to eclipse Ronan O’Gara’s record of 128 Ireland caps.
If he lacks the pace of his youth, the Leinster veteran is arguably still one of the best defensive midfielders around, although the way in which he plays as an auxiliary forward has often left his many admirers wincing on his behalf. Another Six Nations title to set alongside Ireland’s 2009 Grand Slam would be a special way for O’Driscoll to set the seal on a fine career.
Form since 2013 Six Nations: W (USA), W (CAN), W (SAM), L (AUS) L (NZL)
