The Croatian is believed to wanting a move out of Spain and despite reports linking him with moves to Manchester United and Liverpool, AS reports the 29-year-old could be on the move back to the Bundesliga.
Mandzukic’s return to Wolfsburg will depend on the future of Dutchman Bas Dost, who is believed to have had an offer from Newcastle United.
If Dost does indeed leave the Volkswagen Arena, Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking will make the former Bayern Munich forward a key transfer target this summer.
Mandzukic scored 12 goals in 27 La Liga appearances this season, but it believed to have a rocky relationship with animated Atletico manager Diego Simeone.
Juventus, AC Milan and Zenit St Petersberg are also all believed to have interest in Mandzukic, meaning Wolfsburg will face plenty of competition for the striker.
