The agent of FC Schalke 04 midfielder Lewis Holtby says that a major Premier League club have made him an offer – with Liverpool strongly suspected to be the team in question.
Holtby is out of contract at the end of this season, meaning he is free to speak to clubs – and agree a pre-contract deal – in the January transfer window.
“Lewis is very happy at Schalke but above all there is an English club which has made a very interesting proposal,” said Holtby’s agent Marcus Noack to calciomercato.com.
“We are talking with Schalke about a possible extension for another three years.
“Talks are going well at the moment but the situation has definitely changed in the last period because several offers from Spain and England came in.
“My client will have to decide whether to continue to grow in Germany or to try a new experience at the end of this season.
“Inter Milan? We have not received any proposals from Italy and he would prefer [to play in] the Premier League and La Liga.”
The Germany international playmaker (albeit currently captain of the Under-21 side) would be an excellent option to start matches at the top of Liverpool’s midfield three, with two of Joe Allen, Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva behind him.
His style of play would fit in well at Anfield.
Holtby is a fine dribbler with an eye for a pass, and often gets behind a defence to lay it off for a team-mate.
Brendan Rodgers will likely already have his eye on a telepathic relationship between Luis Suarez and the Germany international.
As agent Marcus Noack said though, there is plenty of competition to agree a deal for someone who could be the bargain of summer 2013 – and certainly a much better free transfer than Joe Cole was…
