Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers knows that Liverpool currently lack firepower.
That definitely doesn’t have anything to do with him loaning out Andy Carroll, and selling Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy, and only bringing in Fabio Borini to support Luis Suarez up front.
Still, now having mastered basic subtraction (4 – 2 = 2), Rodgers now realises addition(s) are what are required.
He now says that Liverpool could sign up to THREE strikers in January.
“I feel January is a window to freshen up the squad with a number of names,” said mathematician Rodgers to reporters.
“I don’t want to say a particular number but, at the top end of the field, we need that help and support. That might take two or three players to do that. Luis Suarez is my only striker. Samed Yesil behind him is only 18. That is what we have. That is part of the pain and the building process here.
“This season was always going to be one of transition but that doesn’t stop us being motivated to fight on. You have to be realistic.
“Look at the money being spent at the top of the table, £80 million, and teams that are trying to get into the top four like Tottenham are spending over £50m. It is a big task we have but a task we have to embrace.”
Of course, that conveniently forgets to mention the £100m that Liverpool have spent in the FSG regime under Kenny Dalglish – a set of players that Rodgers does not have faith in – and has struggled to offload.
Who could Liverpool sign in January to improve matters then?
