Chelsea are thought to be mulling over a bid for VfL Wolfsburg left back Ricardo Rodriguez.
It is safe to assume that Rodriguez will be the long term replacement for Ashley Cole, who looks set to leave Stamford Bridge.
Cole looks set to be the victim of Chelsea’s new policy of only offering one year deals to any player over 30.
With the England veteran only 31, and still regarded as one of the best in his position in the world game, he could be forced out of his club early – and ultimately prove a bargain for someone else next season.
Ricardo Rodriguez is an interesting choice to take his place though.
The 20 year-old is already a Switzerland international – despite Chilean and Spanish parentage – and looks a great prospect.
Good in concentration and a strong presence in the air, Rodriguez is primarily a solid defender.
He could certainly improve his distribution though, particularly if he is to fit into Chelsea’s quick passing pattern of play, but he has plenty of time to do so.
Buying Rodriguez before he reaches his full potential would be more frugal of course, but Wolfsburg are hardly struggling financially – thanks to their owners Volkswagen.
They will likely drive a hard bargain, but it could be well worth it for Chelsea.
