Liverpool youngster Raheem Sterling has rejected the club’s offer of a new contract, according to the Daily Mail.
Sterling has 18 months left on his deal, which the Mail say is worth only £2,000 per week.
Relatively speaking of course. That kind of figure just depresses the rest of us poor souls.
The club has offered him £20,000 per week, but 17 year-old Sterling is reportedly holding out for £50,000 every seven days, citing the £60,000 that Stewart Downing earns in that time as an example.
Downing of course has been frozen out of first team affairs at Liverpool, with Sterling taking his place on the wing – and in the England setup.
Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers is certainly impressed with his form so far this season, and feels his place in the England squad is fully warranted given his consistent performances.
“He has been fantastic this season since he has broken in,” said Rodgers.
“It’s a great effort by him. He deserves his call-up.”
Has Sterling got ideas above his station, or are Liverpool merely failing to offer him the going rate?
Neither it seems.
Sterling took to Twitter to deny the rumours he had turned down a contract, stating that he was waiting until he was eighteen to commit to the club.
“morning tweeps I’ve just woken up to this rubbish i can assure you I’ve not asked for that stupid amount where waiting till I’m 18 2 sign”
Succint, and in 140 characters too.
