A defensive player is a priority, but the franchise could look to trade up due to number of available picks.
The San Francisco 49ers know that a defensive lineman is the main priority in this year’s draft – and there is plenty of available talent, making the immediate signing of an impact player a possibility.
This year’s draft is one of the deepest in terms of talent for years and the 49ers are in a good position to upgrade dramatically.
If the franchise were to stay in their current spot – number 31 – they could have the chance to draft LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery. The 22 year-old had a very productive college career, and the highly-sought prospect will a have a very successful NFL career too.
San Francisco will benefit from Motngomery playing in the shadows of fellow LSU lineman Barkevious Mingo, who has become the more sought after of the two.
The 49ers have another option: to use the huge arsenal of picks at their disposal to move up the board and go out to grab an elite talent, such as Ezekiel Ansah from BYU.
Ansah possess all kinds of physical upside, and would be the perfect fit in the 49ers mold of fast and physical pass rushers, but will probably be available no lower than pick 15, so the 49ers will have to cough up a few picks to move up high enough to draft him.
Whoever the team selects, the talented front office led by GM Trent Baalke will pick a gem, and continue to build this team into a consistent Superbowl contender.
