1. Financially, Wenger is keeping the club secure
Anthony Martial’s £36m move to Man United is just another example of the transfer window gone mad. Raheem Sterling’s transfer fee was bad enough, for that much money on an ultimately untested 19-year-old is ridiculous.
There is an argument to suggest that Wenger knew that he needed another striker, but a favourable situation or an available player for the right price didn’t present themselves. Karim Benzema didn’t want to leave, and £50m-plus for Edinson Cavani, who turns 29 next year, is a huge outlay for a player with only two or three years left at the very top.
Arsenal are in a good place off the pitch, and that is down to Wenger’s prudent work in the market over a significant period of time. Having proven it with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil most recently, Wenger buys sensibly and gets value for his money.
