4) Ashley Young and Kyle Walker should not be playing for England.
Firstly, let’s make it clear that Young and Walker are good Premier League players. The former especially has proven over a number of years that he has a set of skills he can execute consistently – mainly cutting in from the left and curling a ball into the far post. Walker though, seems to have no defensive attributes whatsoever. He’s very quick, and very fit – but he’s an athlete, and certainly not an England defender. How many times can one player be ten yards out of position? Young can’t get in the United side, and there’s no reason whatsoever why he should be getting matches for his country with cameos like he offered last night. The quicker Glenn Johnson returns at right-back, and Wayne Rooney’s head recovers, the better.
5) Rickie Lambert will be out of the side when Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge return.
Lambert held the ball up well in the first half, and although he struggled in the second half, he was by no means one of England’s worst performers. But have you ever seen a striker look less likely of scoring a goal…? Lambert has no pace at all in behind a defence, and he will never make a chance for himself. He’s a very good finisher, but with service completely limited like it was last night, his inclusion seems pointless. The quicker Rooney, Welbeck and Sturridge get fit, the better.
