Lovie Smith seemed like the perfect man for the Buccaneers job: A former assistant on their 2002 Superbowl team, took the Chicago Bears to the Superbowl in 2006, won 3 division titles and is generally considered a defensive genius. But for some reason – most likely his odd choice at QB – the Buccaneers have simply not played up to their talent level. One would think that a team with Vincent Jackson, Doug Martin, and Mike Evans on offense with a stacked defensive line, LB Lavonte David and CB Alterraun Verner on defense would be lighting up the league – but instead they have the appearance (And record) of their moribund expansion team of the early 1970s. Something needs to be fixed and fixed now or Smith’s tenure in Tampa Bay will be a short one.

5. New York Giants – In the first quarter it looked like the Giants game had been replaced with a re-run of the 2008 Lions: giving up a first-down off a fake punt pass by Punter Shane Lechler, fumbling at the 5-yard line, and nearly everything else that was strange was only the tip of the iceberg for this team before Eli Manning finally played up to his surname in the second quarter.
4. Minnesota Vikings – It started sooner than most were expecting, but the Teddy Bridgewater-era in Minnesota has finally begun.
3. Oakland Raiders – A gutty effort against the Patriots that could have been the upset of the season was negated by a penalty followed by an interception. For the effort, the Raiders deserve to move up at least a little bit.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Tampa Bay was humiliated against the Falcons in a way that neither Raheem Morris nor Greg Schiano ever were. This team just has too much talent to be this terrible.
