The Daily Star say the Red Devils have made the Welshman their top summer target as they prepare to embark on another transfer window of incredible investment to become champions once again.
However, the signing of Bale – just as when he arrived at the Bernabeu – could have near fatal consequences for the career of Angel Di Maria with the Star claiming the Argentine would join Paris Saint Germain on a season-long loan ahead of a £45m permanent move.
The deal seems to hinge on whether the United hierarchy can convince Perez that selling Bale at this moment is good business, despite spending near £80m on him just two seasons ago and likely to see little to no increase on that amount if they go ahead with a move.
Bale himself is believed to be keen on a return to the Premeir League which could count in United’s favour.
He has become disillusioned with life at the Bernabeu after a up and down season that has seen him singled out for criticism by fans, including after their semi-final loss to Juventus which means they will be unable to defend their Champions League title in Munich.
However, it seems one key reason behind the move might be, ultimately, for commercial benefits with the Star reporting that the club’s impending £750m sponsorship deal with adidas means they desire a marquee, poster boy to flaunt the new kits.
