Reports in the Daily Mail claimed that if Mata were to replace the suspended Wayne Rooney against Everton today, that it could see the end of Januzaj in the January transfer window.
The Spanish midfielder has indeed got the nod, and if he takes his opportunity to impress this afternoon, Van Gaal will surely determine that he is the right man to remain as part of his Old Trafford squad.
Mail reporters determined that the situation had effectively come down to a shootout between the two players, with only one star likely to remain as part of the Red Devils setup.
Mata has been on the bench for United’s last two games, while Januzaj is yet to start a competitive game for the club under the Dutchman’s leadership, something that has led the Belgian to become increasingly frustrated.
In recent years, United have lost many of their promising young stars – Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison and Gerard Pique in particular – and Van Gaal must surely know that the longer he keeps Januzaj on the fringes of the first-team, the greater the chance he will leave.
