Cameroon ace has Inter “in his heart”.
Anzhi striker Samuel Eto’o doesn’t expect to join Chelsea this summer according to his agent, who reveals Inter remain a possibility.
The Cameroon international is on the market this summer after his current employers decided to disband the crop of big names that were brought to the club in an ambitious project over the past two years.
The 32-year-old has been linked with a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho, but his representative has revealed that it is unlikely to happen due to his age and the offer on the table.
“Chelsea have a clear club policy of not signing players over 30,” Claudio Vigorelli told Il Giornale as reported by Football Italia.
“I spoke to Jose, who was willing to give Samuel a one-year contract, but Chelsea are waiting for Wayne Rooney. Mourinho only has him in mind and is waiting for the situation with Manchester United to find a breakthrough.”
As a result, that would put Inter in pole position to bring back their former striker, who he helped to the treble back in 2010.
The Nerazzurri were forced to sell the former Barcelona man in order to balance their books by reducing their wage bill, and it is a problem that still threatens to rule out his comeback.
“There is a terrible recession around now and it’s not just a question of lowering his wages. It’s hard to find a club willing to give €8m or even €5m per season,” Vigorelli continued.
“Inter too are down to the bone. Eto’o would happily come back, but these are difficult times. We are talking about it.
“What I can guarantee is that Inter and Massimo Moratti remain in his heart.”
Vigorelli also revealed he had held initial talks with both Napoli and Roma over the possibility of Eto’o returning to Italy this season.
