A-League club to use its biggest marketing tool in Asian market.
Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero will feature in Sydney FC’s friendly against J-League side Sagan Tosu in Japan in July, the club said on Saturday.
Sydney will play the game in Tosu City on July 24 as part of their pre-season schedule.
“Sydney FC has enjoyed a significant increase in exposure across Europe since Alessandro Del Piero joined the club and this allows us to increase our brand awareness in one of the critical markets of Asia,” Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata said in a statement.
The match will be Sydney FC’s fourth trip to Japan, having played matches in Tokyo and Nagoya at the 2005 FIFA Club World Championship, as well as AFC Champions League matches against Urawa Red Diamonds (2007) and Kashima Antlers (2011).
While Del Piero has a big following in Japan, Sydney FC have other Japanese links following Kazuyoshi “Kazu” Miura’s guest stint with the Sky Blues in 2005.
