Mesut Ozil will have felt aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty after a clumsy foul from Nathan Ake, but Sanchez made it irrelevant and slotted home to open the scoring.
The Chilean international has now scored 10 goals in his last six appearances in all competitions for club and country, as he continues to play a pivotal role in Arsene Wenger’s side push to become legitimate Premier League title contenders.
The Gunners arguably feared losing their momentum as the international break interrupted their progress following their 3-0 win over Manchester United a fortnight ago.
However, despite the break from domestic matters, they got straight back to business to secure a comfortable win over their London rivals to reduce the gap to leaders Manchester City back to two points.
Both City and Manchester United had won earlier in the day, both in convincing fashion, and so the pressure was certainly on Arsenal to respond.
Wenger’s side certainly did respond with an emphatic second-half performance at Vicarage Road to pick up an important three points as they switch their focus to the Champions League in mid-week with their encounter with Bayern Munich.
