The coming of Mark Hughes as a replacement for the thuggish but effective Tony Pulis was supposed to signal a new era of “totaal-voetbal” at the Britannia. But the Welshman was handed a shoestring budget and, after snapping up promising former Barcelona trainee Marc Muniesa on a free, Hughes spent most of it on experienced defender Eric Pieters and erratic Austrian Marko Arnautovic.
Uninspired? Thought so.
