As long as Sam Allardyce remains in a job, Liverpool know they can throw money at magnificently overpriced English players and still hope to recoup a sell-on fee. The Hammers reunited Anfield flops Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll at Upton Park this summer, shelling out over £21m for the pair. But Allardyce has never made excuses about his love of a powerful target man and a winger who can cross, so the pair should suit the Hammers’ style down to the ground (or up in the air, if you like).
The club’s failure to land another striker, despite attempts to sign several on deadline day was a blow, however, particularly as their mid-table rivals strengthened.
