AMC: Wayne Rooney – 6/10
England’s newly-crowned leading goalscorer, Rooney was not involved in many of United’s significant attacking moments but made a key defensive intervention with a brave header in stoppage time. Returning to the team after injury, he and United will benefit from Martial spearheading the line.
ST: Anthony Martial – 9/10
The teenager’s dream start to his United career continued with a clinically-taken double in which he displayed great composure and footwork. Has dismissed the pressure of the price tag immediately.
Substitutes
Antonio Valencia – 7/10
Louis van Gaal swapped the Ecuadorian for Darmian after 45 minutes, and he brought great energy to the right flank as the Red Devils continued their momentum from the latter stages of the first half.
Bastian Schweinsteiger – 7/10
The visitors looked less likely to be caught out through the middle after the German replaced Carrick. Few can dictate a game like the World Cup winner and he brought great control to United’s play.
Paddy McNair – 6/10
The young defender has been on the bench for all but one of United’s games so far this season and finally got a run out. Won some big headers, but gave Pelle too much room for Southampton’s second.
