Defensive midfield:
Marouane Fellaini (Belgium) – Despite a difficult season since his £27m move to Manchester United, Marouane Fellaini remains a key player for Belgium and has performed well for his country in their run to the World Cup quarter-finals. When on form, as in his days at Everton, Fellaini is undoubtedly a top midfielder and deserving of a place in this side.
Javier Mascherano (Argentina) – Although usually played in defence for Barcelona, former Liverpool star Javier Mascherano is one of the best defensive midfielders in the game, and has been reliable as ever for Argentina at these World Cup finals. In what would certainly be a strong and aggressive midfield pairing, Mascherano lines up in this combined XI alongside his opposite number Fellaini, in what should also make a good battle in tonight’s game.
