Argentina Best Teams – Who are the leading lights so far this season?
1) San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo are arguably the biggest disappointment in the entire CONMEBOL region so far this term. The Copa Libertadores champions have looked a shadow of the side which won the region’s flagship tournament so convincingly in August, and languish 14th in the table. They’ve lost six of their twelve games and their inconsistency is proving to be their downfall. They need to improve fast if they are to avoid a flogging in the Club World Cup in December.
2) Boca Juniors
The giants of the Argentine game have been out of sorts this season. They currently sit fifth, but already trail leaders River Plate by eight points. They changed managers after four games, and while new-man-in-charge Rodolfo Arruabarrena has undoubtedly improved the defence, they still look weak in attack. Arruabarrena has won 5, drawn 2 and only lost once. Previous manager Carlos Bianchi had won 1 and lost 3, so there’s definite improvement.
3) Olimpo
Last in the table for a minnow might not be worth mentioning ordinarily, but the fact Olimpo are the only team in the league who are yet to break double figures for goals scored is what has been so disappointing to fans. They’ve only managed 7 strikes in 12 games, and will be thankful there is no relegation at the end of the season due to the league’s impending expansion.
