The Arizona Cardinals released linebacker Ernie Sims after deciding that he has no chance of making the 53-man roster.
The Arizona Cardinals signed Ernie Sims earlier in the offseason to fill the hole left by Daryl Washington, who has been suspended for the entire 2014 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
However, Sims will no longer be in Arizona. The Cardinals decided to release Sims before their first preseason game, but he was not expected to make the roster anyway.
Linebackers such as Kevin Minter and Larry Foote were already ahead of him on the depth chart, and his past performance has been underwhelming.
Although his first three years with the Detroit Lions were serviceable, Sims has failed to make an impact for every other team he has played for. Sims recorded at least 100 tackles from 2006-08, but his statistics have dropped off since then.
It is looking bleak for Sims’ chances to make an NFL roster, but the phone may start ringing for him again if a team is desperate for linebacker depth.
