Chargers QB Philip Rivers, the reigning Comeback Player of the Year, will sit out the final preseason game against the Cardinals.
The San Diego Chargers will host the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night in a preview of a game they will play for real on Monday Night Football the following week.
The Chargers play their third straight game against an NFC West opponent, losing their last two to the Seahawks and 49ers by a combined score of 21-62. With the first-team offense slated to sit out, QB Kellen Clemens, who started 9 games for the St. Louis Rams in 2013, will probably get the start. The team will also give more reps to underrated backup RB Danny Woodhead, who the team signed to an extension.
The Cardinals will be resting nearly all of their starters – QB Carson Palmer, WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd and most likely RB Andre Ellington. Rookie QB Logan Thomas, who the Cardinals took in the 4th round of the 2014 draft and has been impressing coaches in practice, will likely see plenty of time as he tries to show the team that he might be the team’s long-term answer at QB.
Prediction: Cardinals – QB Logan Thomas is better than Kellen Clemens and the team has a lot more depth on the defense than the Chargers do.
