Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald saw a limited role in the season opener against the San Diego Chargers despite the Cardinals storming to an 18-17 comeback victory.
On Thursday, it was revealed that the veteran receiver had been playing with a knee injury. This dated back to the Cardinals’ third preseason game.
Head coach Bruce Arians expressed his desire to be cautious with Fitzgerald. “I learned my lesson last year not to ask (Larry) to do things in a game that you’re not practicing. It’s not fair to the quarterback either,” Arians said to the Arizona Cardinals blog.
Luckily, the Cardinals were able to function on offense as quarterback Carson Palmer had a solid game while wide receiver Michael Floyd continued to be a key weapon in the Cardinals offense.
Fitzgerald was limited last season by hamstring injuries, but he still finished with 82 receptions, 954 yards and 10 touchdowns. If the receiver cannot get over his minor injury, it may be difficult for him to reach 1,000 yards or double-digit touchdowns since he was held to one catch for 22 yards by the Chargers.
