According to Marca, as reported by the Metro, Bilbao are waiting for the Gunners to sign a left-back of their own in order to make up for the loss of Monreal before they can continue with their pursuit.
The Spanish outfit have been monitoring Monreal’s situation for some time, and it is claimed that they are ready to offer him a three-year deal to join them.
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has been linked with a move for Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam, although the two clubs are still significantly apart in their valuation of the player.
As a result, much will depend on the Frenchman’s ability to bring in a replacement before Monreal is given the green light to return to his homeland ahead of the new campaign.
Arsenal have already brought in former Chelsea stopper Petr Cech this summer, and it appears as though shoring up their defence is still a priority for the Premier League giants.
