The Gunners have been on the lookout for recruitment at the back ever since the £15m sale of former captain Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona.
In the absence of Per Mertesacker, new £16m summer signing Calum Chambers had been filling in at centre-back and impressed, but with the 19-year-old generally considered to be a right-back manager Arsene Wenger wants more support.
Tuesday saw two central defenders that the North London outfit had their eye on complete moves to different clubs, with Mehdi Benatia joining Bayern Munich and Kostas Manolas replacing him at AS Roma.
Alderweireld joined Atleti from Ajax last year, but has since struggled to establish himself at the Vicente Calderon Stadium and could well welcome a move away.
The Belgium international played 22 times for the Spanish champions in all competitions during their La Liga winning season and march to the Champions League final.
The 25-year-old also offers versatility as although generally considered a centre-back, Alderweireld can also play a right-back – a position he operated in for the Belgian national team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
