The 27-year-old is a world-class anchorman, and despite being part of the German national side that won the World Cup over the summer, injuries have plagued the past two seasons of his career.
With Toni Kroos and Luka Modric dominating the Real Madrid midfield spots – Los Blancos are likely to let the anchorman leave – and Arsenal (desperate for a defensive midfielder) are favourites to snap him up.
Khedira’s contract expires at the end of the season, and while Arsenal could technically sign him on a free transfer in January because of the Bosman ruling (he wouldn’t actually arrive until the Summer), the Gunners are expected to splash some money to secure mid-season.
With Mikel Arteta ageing, and Mathieu Flamini technically weak – Khedira could well be the final piece in Arsene Wenger’s jigsaw.
