After conceding three opening day goals and a slew of injuries, Wenger is turning to Ajax for reinforcement.
Arsenal are set to turn to highly sought-after Ajax centre-back Toby Alderweireld.
After a poor display from a severely weakened defence during his side’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa, manager Arsene Wenger will be hoping that £6m will be enough to pry the Belgian away from the Dutch champions.
Alderweireld has been a regular mention all throughout this transfer window with both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur being linked with the defender at some point – now Arsenal are the latest name to be linked with the 24-year-old international.
Arsenal would certainly be a sensible move for Alderweireld. The Gunners’ squad is currently paper thin thanks to their multitude of departures and well-documented troubles with purchases. With Thomas Vermaelen, Nacho Monreal and Bacary Sagna all struggling for fitness, the young Belgian would be a much-appreciated supplement to Arsenal’s depleted defence.
Alderweireld debuted for Ajax at just 18 years of age and has already accumulated 124 appearances for the side. A key fixture of Ajax’s defence by the 2010-11 season he went on to win the Eredivisie three seasons in a row, his performances meriting 24 national team call-ups with Belgian.
