But Frenchman says former skipper will remain at Barcelona for one more year.
Arsene Wenger says former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas will not be joining Manchester United this summer and has admitted the Gunners remain on ‘alert’ over the Spaniard’s availability.
United reportedly bid £26m for the Barcelona starlet earlier this week but Arsenal are understood to have first option to re-sign the Spain international, who swapped north London for Catalonia the summer before last.
“Fabregas has decided to stay one more year at Barcelona. Unless he has changed his mind.
I don’t know. But that’s what I have been told.
“We have the clause in his contract so we would be on alert but at the moment that’s not something we are after,” the Frenchman said following the 7-1 friendly win over Vietnam.
If Wenger’s information is accurate, the news will come as a further blow to United, who have already missed out on the signing of Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara, who opted to join Bayern Munich at the weekend.
Conversely, the Arsenal boss’ confirmation that the club do have a clause in Fabregas’ contract will give Gunners fans renewed hope that Fabregas, 26, will return to the Emirates Stadium in the future.
