Premier League trio Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United are all on alert as Sporting Lisbon lower their asking price for midfielder William Carvalho, according to the Daily Express.
The Primeira Liga club had been holding out for £35m and have refused to budge all summer, yet have finally accepted the 22-year-old wants to leave and have lowered their demands as a result.
Both the Blues and United have cooled their interest in recent times, with the former starting the season well and therefore considering ending their recruitment for the time being and the latter focusing their attention on Real Madrid ace Angel di Maria.
This has left the Gunners leading the chase with manager Arsene Wenger keen to sign a defensive midfielder before the transfer window shuts on September 1.
So far the likes of Sami Khedira and Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin have been linked with the role, but Carvalho is perhaps the best suited.
Wenger will be especially interested now Sporting have decided to lower their demands by a full £11m to make the Portugal international’s price-tag £24m.
The need for a holding player has been exposed already this term and has been exacerbated by an injury to captain Mikel Arteta – the man who usually assumes the position.
