Meyer has extended the teenager’s stay with Schalke.
Schalke 04 midfielder Max Meyer has emerged as one of the most promising young talents in European football and Arsenal and Chelsea were both interested as a result.
Yet the 18-year-old has dashed the hopes of the Premier League duo signing the youngster any time soon, as Meyer extends the player’s contract in Germany by another three years.
Schalke have been disappointing this season and sit sixth in the Bundesliga and face a very real prospect of crashing out of the Champions League at the first hurdle.
Many thought this dip in form would see Meyer wanting to leave the club and the Gunners and the Blues were circling as a result.
However, against the odds the teenager has actually signed a new deal with the Germans that will see the starlet stay until 2018, a development manager Horst Heldt is delighted with.
“This is excellent news for our club,” Heldt told the club’s website.
“His footballing development in the past few months was almost breathtaking Therefore we are very pleased that we have bound such a gem to FC Schalke 04.”
Meyer broke into the Schalke first team earlier this year and has already made 19 appearances in all competitions in the 2013/14 season and scored six goals.
At still such a young age this is an impressive achievement and it also includes gaining valuable experience in the Champions League.
In fact Jose Mourinho has been able to see Meyer first hand as the west London club have played Schalke twice in the top tier of European football.
