The best XI to never have won the Champions League: Former Arsenal stars and Chelsea stars miss out
The Germany international is said to have agreed a pre-contract with the newly crowned La Liga champions as they have identified him as the ideal long term replacement for veteran pass master Xavi.
Reports in Spanish paper El Mundo Deportivo are claiming that the medical went off without a hitch and he will link up with them in the summer of 2016.
The news will come as a substantial blow to both Manchester United and Arsenal, who had been heavily linked with a move for him over the coming months.
Barca had previously been interested in landing his services themselves back in 2014, but backed out of the deal over concerns about his fitness.
But they have no such worries this time around and will look to push the deal through shortly.
