Carvalho has been lined up as a possible replacement for Asier Illarramendi this summer, if the Spaniard decides to move on after a frustrating spell at the Bernabeu.
According to AS, the Portugal international has a €45m release clause in his contract, but Madrid would look to pay less than that figure if they are to sign him.
The Sporting midfielder has long been a target for some of the top clubs from around Europe, and his performances at the European Under-21 Championships this summer did no harm to his chances of securing a move elsewhere.
Both Arsenal and United have been linked with a move previously, but it remains to be seen if the Premier League giants are beaten to the punch by Madrid who will potentially make their move in the coming weeks if Illarramendi’s exit opens up a spot in their squad.
