Alderweireld look set to move to Atletico.
Despite Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur all showing interest in the defender, Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld looks set to sign for Atletico Madrid, according to the Daily Mail.
The Premier League trio had been tracking the Belgian for some time but it is Atleti who are about to win the race, which could prove to be good news for Manchester City.
The 24-year-old’s arrival at the Vicente Calderon Stadium will mean that Manuel Pellegrini stands a better chance of landing former centre-back Martin Demichelis.
Pellegrini managed the 32-year-old whilst at Malaga, but Demichelis joined Atleti on a free transfer this summer.
However, despite only having been at the club two months, the Madrid outfit demanded that City paid £5m for the Argentine – something the 2012 Premier League champions were unprepared to do.
Yet by signing Alderweireld Atletico may now be willing to drop that price and the Citizens can bring in much needed cover for injured captain Vincent Kompany – a national team mate of the Ajax ace.
Alderweireld is one of a long line of talented Belgians that are emerging currently, having broken into the first team at the Amsterdam ArenA in 2009.
Since then the defender has played 186 matches for the Dutch champions and has earned vital experience in the Champions League.
Despite the likes of Kompany, Jan Vertonghen and Thomas Vermaelen all competing for places in the national team, Alderweireld has also earned 23 caps to date for Belgium.
