Arsene Wenger has been massively impressed with FC Basel’s Fabian Schar…
Arsenal will try to sign FC Basel’s 21-year-old centre-half Fabian Schar when the transfer window opens in January, reports insidefutbol.
The youngster has only been at the Swiss champions for one full season, but has mightily impressed since being recruited from the Swiss lower leagues.
He’s made 28 league appearances for Basel, earning himself four full caps for Switzerland in the process.
Schar performed admirably in FC Basel’s shock Champions League victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last week, and he’s caught the eye of both Arsenal and Juventus.
The Gunners are keen on signing another centre-half, as injury problems forced them to play Bacary Sagna in the middle of defence earlier in the season.
They will face competition from Italian champions Juventus though, who have been similarly impressed with the defender’s meteoric rise, and are set to lodge an £8m offer for the star.
Schar is tall and strong in the air, but is also composed with the ball at his feet, like most top centre-halves nowadays.
He would provide strong cover for first-choice pairing at Arsenal Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, and could force his way into Wenger’s starting line-up if he continues to develop at such an impressive rate.
