The Gunners and Liverpool face competition from Everton for Keisuke Honda…
Liverpool and Arsenal could go head to head in the battle to sign CSKA Moscow’s 27-year-old Japanese playmaker Keisuke Honda, reports the Daily Star.
Honda is highly regarded among many European clubs, and has announced that he will be leaving Russia in January, after failing to secure a move to AC Milan this summer.
His contract will be expired, so a Premier League side could snap up the mercurial operator on a free transfer.
“I have many choices, but I want to compare as much as possible,” said the talented attacking midfielder.
“I don’t think there’s a chance I will stay in Russia.
“I just need to focus on the Russian league and the Champions League, so I don’t want to talk about this right now,” added Honda, who starred for Japan in the last World Cup.
Despite the report, it is unlikely Arsenal will move for Honda after signing Mesut Ozil for £42m on the final day of the transfer window this summer. With Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere already vying for attacking creative midfield positions, adding Honda to the Emirates roster seems unnecessary.
Wenger has previously stated his admiration for the Japanese, but he would be unlikely to get game time at Arsenal this season barring injuries.
Liverpool on the other hand, are desperate to strengthen the attacking positions, with only Coutinho as a recognised established first-team option. Iago Aspas and Luis Suarez are primarily forwards, and Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe are inexperienced.
Everton too could do with adding some flair and imagination of the side following the £27m sale of Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United on the final day of the transfer window.
Whether either side targets Honda come January remains to be seen.
