Arsenal have taken the lead in the race for Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam – much to the chagrin of Chelsea and Manchester United.
According to the Metro, the Gunners have begun talks with Napoli over the potential transfer of the 24-year-old left back. The Metro reported that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sees Ghoulam as a piece to greatly augment his defensive options and is hoping to secure the transfer for somewhere in the range of £7-8 million.
Ghoulam has been a rock for Napoli since joining in 2013, but the recent departure of manager Rafa Benitez to Real Madrid has the 24-year-old Algerian national eager to take his talents elsewhere – namely, the Premier League.
Among the other interested clubs are Chelsea and Man United, but both of whom appear to be focusing more significant resources elsewhere. Man City and Atletico Madrid have been mentioned as possible suitors as well.
Ghoulam was named to the 2014-15 UEFA Squad of the Season alongside fellow Napoli defender Raul Albiol.
