Gunners chief happy to take chance on Saints youngster.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes he is taking a big gamble on signing Southampton starlet Calum Chambers, but it is one that he is more than willing to take, according to Sky Sports.
The 19-year-old has already completed a medical ahead of a switch to the Emirates as he prepares to become Wenger’s fourth summer signing for a fee of around £16m.
Wenger has already boosted his squad with the arrivals of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina, but Chambers will provide defensive cover following the departure of Bacary Sagna, while Thomas Vermaelen is also reportedly set for an exit.
The England youth international first broke through into the Southampton first team in 2012 before going on to make 18 appearances for the club last season, and Wenger believes that he will prove to be a very valuable addition to his side.
“He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions,” Wenger said.
“He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.”
Wenger will now take his side on a pre-season tour of Austria.
