Arsenal close in on signing of Real Madrid star with Arsene Wenger meeting player and agent in Paris.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has held talks with Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain and his father and agent Jorge in Paris, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
Argentina international Higuain is free to leave the Spanish capital this summer, and has even talked up the idea of signing for the Gunners.
“Arsenal? They would suit me,” admitted Higuain.
“I’m still young and I have goals.”
Juventus are the Gunners’ clear rivals for the 25 year-old’s signature, and Jorge Higuain believes his son and client will make a decision between the two after discussions with each club.
“Madrid will want to sell. Juventus or Arsenal? I guess he has spoken with them,” confirmed Higuain senior.
“The clubs first have to talk to Madrid and in direct negotiation. Higuain currently has three years left on his contract.”
Gonzalo Higuain found himself sharing the centre forward role at Real Madrid with Karim Benzema, but despite inconsistent selection from the start of games, he still managed to score 18 goals in his 41 appearances for the Spanish capital club.
That goal total includes 16 strikes in La Liga from just 19 starts, and only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored more goals in the Spanish League since Higuain signed for Real Madrid in 2007.
Understandably, Arsenal will hope that they can persuade Higuain to sign for the north London club this summer – and that Arsene Wenger was convincing when attempting to sell the Argentine a move to Arsenal.
