Dyke this week claimed that he wants the homegrown quota increased from eight players to twelve, which would the in-turn decrease the number of foreign stars Premier League teams can include in their 25-man squad (via the Guardian).
Wenger had previously suggested that the best players will always make it through the academies into the first team if they are good enough and these rules are nothing but a practice of “superficial protection” (via Daily Mail).
“I believe that we are in the world of competition. Competition means who of you or me is the best one. We have to accept that,” Wenger this week told beIN Sports (via the Mirror).
“That means as well that the rules of the game must be structured to favour the best. Or we are not in a competition anymore.
“So we can say one of two things – we protect the mediocre or we produce the best players.”
Dyke referenced Harry Kane’s rise as a reason for change according to the Guardian, but Wenger also cited the Spurs striker’s prominence to prove that the cream will always rise to the top no matter the competition in the squad or nationality.
