Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes his £42m superstar Mesut Ozil can be as good for the Gunners as Robert Pires, reports the Daily Mirror.
Since Wenger made the German playmaker British football’s most expensive ever import in the summer, Arsenal have defied most expectations, and will go back to the top of the Premier League table if they beat Chelsea on Monday evening.
Ozil has been a central part of this, assisting seven goals in the league, and scoring five in all competitions, but Wenger reckons he can get even better.
“I believe that he has a personality,” said the veteran French boss.
“He works quite hard. He is adapting to the physical challenges of the Premier League.
“He looks to me like Pires. It took a while for Pires to adapt to the physical side of the game. Once he had adapted he was absolutely amazing. He is a similar type of player.”
Pires is widely regarded as an Arsenal great, having won two Premier League titles during his six year stint at the turn of the Millennium, where he was also made the Football Writer’s Footballer of the Year in 2002.
Ozil has actually come in for slight criticism at times this season, with some pundits claiming he’s inconsistent and lightweight. Wenger though will remember that it took Pires time to adapt to the Premier League, and no-one in football has ever doubted Ozil’s talent.
