Radamel Falcao is a realistic transfer target for Arsenal, says Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the north London club has the funds to spend £80 million on the likes of Atletico Madrid goal machine Radamel Falcao.
The Colombian forward has become one of the most feared players in world football thanks to his astonishing record in front of goal, and his scoring rate has even kept pace with the likes of FC Barcelona ace Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid.
Understandably, he has attracted the interest of Chelsea and Manchester City, but according to the Daily Mail, Wenger could enter the race for Falcao’s signature if he chose.
Asked if Arsenal could meet both the 27 year-old’s reported £40m asking price and his £40m wage demands over the duration of his contract, Wenger answered in the affirmative.
“We can do it (Falcao),” confirmed Wenger.
“If we find a player of top, top quality we will take him.
“We are in a stronger situation where we can spend some money. I’m not reluctant to do so. First of all, we only had money recently. We went out to spend money at Christmas but we didn’t find the players.”
Although Bayern Munich were in control throughout the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 clash with the Gunners, Wenger believes that the gap between the sides is not as large as it appeared.
“We are not as far from Bayern as people think. In some areas of the team we can compete with anyone in the world. With Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla we have a very strong technical basis, but we need to be more efficient.”
After selling their world class striker in Robin Van Persie, Arsenal were left with a deficit of firepower.
Olivier Giroud has improved a great deal since his difficult to start to life in north London, while Theo Walcott is yet to prove he can truly hurt the best teams in the orthodox striker role.
Perhaps with a player of the calibre of Falcao, Arsenal might have been able to do some damage against Bayern Munich.
