The Gunners have a lot of firepower up front, but a strong defensive midfielder like Busquets could turn “great” into “elite.” Will Arsene Wenger get his man?
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is eager to bring Barcelona midfield star Sergio Busquets to Emirates Stadium – so eager that he’s even gone to the higher-ups to get the ball rolling.
According to the Metro, Wenger sees the 27-year-old Busquets as a future replacement for 33-year-old Mikel Arteta and has the Barcelona ace pegged as his No. 1 summer transfer target. The Metro reported that Arsenal are concerned that “an injury to Francis Coquelin would leave them reliant on Arteta and Mathieu Flamini.” As a result, Wenger wants his Arteta’s successor sooner rather than later.
In 2011, Busquets signed a long-term contract with the La Liga and Champions League champions that had a whopping €150 million buyout clause. He received a new contract earlier this year but ESPN FC reported that the buyout clause remains the same.
But the main issue reportedly may not be the price so much as Busquets’ willingness to leave the club that just put their faith in him with an extension through 2019.
In seven seasons with Barcelona, Busquets has won 5 La Liga titles, 3 Copa Del Ray titles, 3 Champions League titles, and was a member of the Champions League Team of the Season this past year.
