Szczesny questions Gunners’ joy after 1-0 win at St James’ Park.
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has described the team’s delight at sealing fourth place in the Premier League as ‘weird’.
The Gunners secured their place in the Champions League for the 16th consecutive season with a 1-0 over Newcastle at St James’ Park and celebrated wildly at the final whistle.
Their north London rivals Tottenham, meanwhile, agonisingly missed out on UEFA’s premier club competition for the third season running, finishing just one point behind Arsenal in fifth.
Szczesny, who has been in and out of Arsene Wenger’s starting XI in recent weeks, admitted the team’s celebrations were strange considering their objectives at the beginning of the season.
“We celebrated a bit like we had won the Championship which was a bit weird considering the ambition at the start of the season,” the Polish international is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
“We have not conceded a lot of goals and when we got the goal we were confident of getting the result.”
Winger Theo Walcott has said Arsenal want to win next season’s Premier League title.
