DR: Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea)
Arsenal have three or four decent options at right-back, but none as good as Chelsea’s Serbian, who was confirmed their new vice-captain this week. A rock-solid defender and a persistent attacking threat.
DC: John Terry (Chelsea)
Chelsea’s captain is not only the pick of the centre-backs across the two clubs, but arguably the best defender in Premier League history, and well worthy of his selection over Per Mertesacker.
DC: Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal)
Terry’s regular partner Gary Cahill is unlucky to miss out, but Koscielny has improved with every season he has spent at the Emirates Stadium and has developed into an assured and consistent performer.
DL: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea)
Recently described as the best left-back in the Premier League by Jose Mourinho, Azpilicueta dismissed the threat of La Liga winner and Brazil international Filipe Luis last season despite being right-footed.
